The Tropics
The Tropics was my debut collection, consisting of seven pieces. Both the collection and my artistic journey began with my very first piece, Warrior. This collection serves as a foundational representation of my art, embodying the balance I search for between complexity and simplicity. It reflects the core of my style and purpose, offering a clear glimpse into what viewers can expect from my work.
Going for a Swim captures the sensations and stories we experience in and around water. The intricate details along her legs and face symbolize water ripples and the effect those reflections have on our body. The ripples on her face also symbolize our interconnected relationship with nature, reminding us of the harmony and influence it has on us.
Her bathing suit features shapes inspired by a sea turtle's shell and the broken seashells often found scattered along the shore, adding texture and depth to the piece. Behind her, shapes represent both the splash of water and the elegance of a palm leaf, bringing together elements of motion and stillness. Lastly, the smudges around her eye mimic the smearing of mascara after a swim, grounding the piece in a spontaneous, relatable detail.
The overall piece exhibits energy and the spontaneity of "going for it," almost like directly jumping into a body of water without testing it out first.
Soon, originally considered for the title Sonder, portrays a figure immersed in the experience of waiting. The figure’s face is intentionally neutral, evoking a complex array of emotions, concern, patience, and introspection that morph depending on the viewer's personal feelings, reflecting their own state of mind.
Wrapping around the figure, Birds of Paradise flowers intertwine, forming a subtle heart shape, providing comfort and reassurance in the midst of waiting
The title, Soon, emphasizes the nature of time and anticipation. Often, "soon" is a word without a definitive anchor, leaving the individual suspended in the unknown. This art piece encapsulates that tension, allowing viewers to find their own meaning within the wait.
Throughout my artwork, viewers can expect to see many images and abstract forms inspired by the Bird of Paradise plant. This flower holds a special place in my life, symbolizing hope and maintaining faith during life’s trials. Known for its vibrant colors and bird-like shape, the Bird of Paradise represents freedom, joy, and new beginnings. These qualities resonate deeply with me and serve as a foundation for my creative vision.
The plant itself exudes confidence and beauty, with its posture inspiring a sense of resilience and strength. I aim to infuse this energy into my pieces, allowing the flower to serve as a positive and uplifting detail, no matter the background or setting of the artwork. Just as the Bird of Paradise is often associated with optimism, I hope its presence in my work brings the same sense of vitality and encouragement to those who view it.
